O no.

No existen.

But there are two drawbacks to such a policy. So the car hire firms try to persuade you into buying super CDW insurance to cover this first £500-£1,000. The policy is designed to cover excesses of up to up to £6,000*. While car hire agreements typically offer some level of insurance for your rental, excess cover could give you better peace of mind. We can help you find a great price on car hire excess insurance so you know you're covered should the unthinkable happen.

But there's still a wide range of journeys you can do. The same applies in the USA – see Apollo for more information. Paying by card? Buy car hire extras in local currency, not pounds pay in local currency Many overseas banks or shops at overseas airports ask: "Pay in euros, or pounds?", especially in Spanish tourist resorts. So which car hire company do you go with? Shop around, of course, but one firm that we get relatively few complaints about is Holiday Autos. Ford Focus, Peugeot 307, Volkswagen Golf Standard Standard: A four-door car with a 1.8-2.0 litre engine that can fit four to five adults comfortably plus a good amount of luggage.

The renter is obliged to pay for repairing costs of any damage caused to the rental vehicle if the use of the car is not proper, as below: The vehicle is operated on any unauthorised road, non-asphalt road, dirt road or off-road (eg. This includes: Collision Damage Waiver. And the extra catch is that because it's a percentage, it's not just applied to the base rate, it applies to everything, including all additions such as excess reduction costs and GPS hire costs. Additional driver fee If you want more than one person to be authorised to drive the car, hire companies will often charge a fee per day for additional drivers.

Excess kilometres There's often a limit to how many kilometres you can drive. But they charge as much as £150 for a week, compared to the £33 cost of buying it independently is an independent insurance company that will sell you an annual excess policy for Europe for £49, or £4.75 per day for shorter rentals. Unlike the car hire firm's own policies, its policies cover damage to windows, tyres, undercarriage and the roof, and the rest of the car up to £2,000 per single claim.

However, call ahead to check – this isn't guaranteed and you may need to pay extra. Hire motorhomes Down Under dirt cheap Sounds too good to be true, but some firms let you hire campervans and motorhomes in Málaga and the USA for less than a dollar a day. Go to site Transfercar or the wackily-titled to see where you can get the cheapest prices, some days you get to hire for free. These are relocations – you're picking up and dropping off the vehicles at specific locations, so there's less choice. You may not be able to claim without them. Get the paperwork sorted Ask for all paperwork to be completed on the spot.

What is the cheapest way to reduce the car hire excess? The good news is there are better ways to reduce your excess liability than the pressure-sale products foisted on you by the car hire companies. If so, you'll pay extra. In summer, soft-tops or coupes command premiums. If you're offered an upgrade, compare the features you're getting. This will be enough to drive you anywhere in the island.

Today, as budget car rental firms look for savings, the scope of CDW cover has shrunk and new exclusions hide in the small print that nobody reads. A good car rental firm will provide cover if, for example, the car is damaged by driving over a rock on a bend in the road or if it skids on an oily road and hits a wall; a cheapskate company will try to claim negligence on the part of the driver and charge for the full cost of such damage. Most rental companies now charge for clutch failure during the rental - even if you have only driven 50 miles.

What's your liability in the case of a single vehicle accident? Be aware that your liability will often be higher in the case of single vehicle accidents and for premium cars and motor homes. If this happens, you can try seeking a chargeback through your credit card company. For more info, read our article car hire and your rights. Hidden fees While the excess reduction is perhaps the most likely cost to make your hire car bill blow out, there are a bunch of potential extra charges that you should be aware of before you drive.

These include: Administrative fee It's common practice among car hire companies to charge an unavoidable administrative fee of around 3.5% on top of the total cost. Vehicle registration recovery fee This fee is often tacked onto the quote and charged as a daily rate to recover the compulsory costs of registering the vehicle. Credit card surcharges Depending on what credit card you pay with, surcharges tend to vary from 1.5% to 4.95%. To hire a basic economy car in Melbourne for a week from cheap car rental at Malaga airport you'll ostensibly pay $34.40 a day, but to reduce your excess to from $3017 to $342, you'll be slugged with an additional $24 a day.

For the perplexed customer who doesn't want to be left in the lurch, the price of the car just went from $34 to $58 a day – all in about two minutes. One industry source told us that excess reduction products are where car rental companies make most of their money. And always make sure you're using the right plastic to avoid paying nasty foreign exchange fees on the transaction. The trick can occasionally beat comparison sites' best prices for the big name firms too.

Cover for damage and theft are included in the rental cost to the maximum excess amount. You're then told to return the car empty, often with no refund for unused fuel. Following on from the RBA's ruling in 2013, credit card surcharges should be limited to the "reasonable cost of acceptance" associated with processing the transactions. Admin fees on tolls If you're using a rental agency's e-tag system you'll be charged an additional admin fee.

It’ll be cheaper to bring your own. If you’re travelling abroad, charter airlines such as Monarch don’t charge extra for you to bring pushchairs and car seats, while many sat-navs cover both the UK and Europe. Its website makes it very clear what is included in the rental cost. Renault Laguna, Audi A4, Opel Insignia Full Size Full-size: A four-door automatic car or people carrier with the full works including room for five or more and lots of luggage, power steering and air conditioning.

Check the spare wheel is there, inflated and undamaged. All UK car insurance policies automatically provide the correct minimum cover required by law in all EU countries, but check if the full cover extends across Europe for full protection. Package holidays give extra protection The ATOL programme gives extra financial protection if you're booking a holiday via an ATOL-licensed travel agent as part of a formal package. Prices start at £37.99 a year for Europe, while annual worldwide car hire excess starts from £59.99 Better cover.

You not only reduce your potential excess charges to zero but also have better levels of cover (up to £6,000 per incident with these policies), ensuring that all parts of the car are also protected. Even the big firms now adopt this policy. See our Cheap Breakdown Cover guide. Get Our Free Money Tips Email! For all the latest deals, guides and loopholes - join the 10m who get it. This is normal and allows the firm to charge your card the excess if you do have a crash.

Compare this to buying an annual policy in the UK. The cost of adding extra drivers, young drivers, and hiring child seats can be high and varies widely so shop around. Check the Driving section of the AA’s website for advice on local driving regulations. Make sure you have enough capacity on your credit card to stand a hefty deposit. At the car hire desk Make sure the rental voucher and credit card to be used are in the name of the lead driver, otherwise you may be made to pay again. If you reject the local CDW excess product, the agent may try to sell you cheaper cover for roadside assistance (tyre replacement, vehicle recovery, locked-in keys and flat battery).

The claims process isn't entirely easy. Plus, consider taking your own seat, or rent a child's seat on arrival, which could be cheaper than paying the extra. This is so hire firms can check for points, as paper licences are being scrapped for photocard holders with licences issued after 1998. In practice, many firms don't seem to ask for the code at the counter – when we asked 1,700 people in a Twitter poll, just 3% had been asked for the code when hiring a car overseas, and 14% in the UK.

File your complaint online or write to the BVRLA at River Lodge, Badminton Court, Amersham HP7 0DD. And remember that UK rentals are included within both. It’s easy to buy a policy online, get a quote from today so see how much you could save. What are the key benefits? The benefits of taking out a standalone policy before you travel are considerable.

But booking a vehicle in advance – and online – will save you a chunk of cash, leaving you more to spend on the good stuff. What’s more, if you book at the destination airport, or other pick-up point such as in a city centre, you risk ending up with an unsuitable vehicle – when demand soars in peak season, for example. 6: Unexpected charges when you get home You expect to return from holiday with a lighter wallet – but it’s infuriating to find extra taken off your credit card for a bill you thought you’d squared.

The main reasons for car hire firms to charge more than you expected is when they claim you’ve damaged the vehicle in some way or that you returned it without the agreed amount of fuel. To protect yourself, give the vehicle a full inspection both when you pick it up and when you return it and ask for a receipt stating it’s in good order with the required amount of petrol.

Hidden charges Always read the small print of your car hire policy to check for any hidden charges or exclusions. Some car hire companies, for example, charge extra if you’ve been driving for less than four years, while others charge more for including a second driver. And others will levy an “admin” fee for theft or damage to the car – even if you’ve bought an excess waiver policy.

To put it in a nutshell: being thorough in your research when hiring a car is the way to get the best deal. When collecting your hire car, you'll usually be offered different types of products which all come at an extra cost on top of the price of the actual car hire (like breakdown cover, personal injury cover etc).

It can all be a bit confusing and costly, and what a lot of people don't realise, is that often if the hire car is damaged in any way, you are typically liable to pay the excess, which is often between £500 and £2000, depending on who you're hiring the car from. cheap car rental at Malaga airport told Telegraph Money: "We are aware that additional cover charges for overseas rentals are not available when booking online. Go via this MSE link to Reduce My Excess* to select the type of cover you want and fill in your details. They've then had to start the booking all over again – and pay much more for it.

Sometimes comparison sites let you filter results – eg, showing only full-to-full fuel policies – yet when you click through to book, the T&Cs are different. Policies and their limits vary from company to company, so always check them before buying. First do a comparison First use excess car insurance comparison site Moneymaxim*. Once you have a quote enter the code MSE20 in the discount box.

So consider the following first: Check taxi prices If you plan to spend most of the time topping up your tan rather than travelling, a few taxi rides may be cheaper. But do not fear! The alternative is to buy a stand-alone excess reimbursement policy before you travel. You'll be amazed by how much you could save. You should either be offered a higher-category car for no extra charge or a lesser one with the appropriate refund. Make sure this is the case before you sign your contract and drive away.

Paying for extras you could bring yourself Want to use sat-nav when driving abroad or think you’ll need a baby seat? Fine – but don’t fall into the trap of hiring them through your car rental company. Photo the car on return and keep the paperwork Assuming you have done no damage, and have filled it up (if required), park it up and then take digital photos of each panel of the car, the wheels, the mileometer, and other shots. Hand the keys back to the person at the desk.

In the hyrbil Malaga example, above, the cover was 114pc of the price of the car. An equivalent economy-group car from mietwagen Malaga, a VW Polo, at £125 for the same five days in Tenerife later this month, would cost €145 (£116) to cover – or 93pc of the price of the car. International taxi fare calculator Holiday Taxis* gives an estimate of what journeys might cost. Look into public transport Take.

Yet with excess insurance there can be a dispute, so here it's especially important to take pictures and inspect the car before you take it out – and report back any problems they haven't listed. Most firms just ring-fence the deposit – if not there can be an exchange rate risk. Yet a few, eg, cheap car hire at Malaga airport, autovermietung Malaga, hyrbil Malaga and autovermietung Malaga flughafen, may actually withdraw the deposit when you take the car and refund it later.

This means if there are big currency fluctuations while renting you may be affected – MSE Nick found he was down more than £30 on a €1,350 deposit for a car hire in Malta in April 2016. And, second, you may not use all the fuel you’ve paid for if you’re on a short trip or don’t end up driving much. In some cases, you’ll be offered the right to a refund on unused fuel, but there’s still usually a service charge attached.

Look for car hire firms that allow you simply to return the vehicle with the same amount of fuel it had when you picked it up. 3: The ‘upgrade’ option Happy woman with blue car When you arrive at the rental desk to pick up your pre-booked car, you may be told the company has run out of vehicles in the category you chose and be offered an upgrade – at a price. Don’t fall for it. Your liability will often be higher in the case of a single vehicle accident.

The card firm may again try to ignore it, but they are in the UK, and will be easier to tackle. Leave the car there without booking first and you risk sky-high rates, so don't just turn up. Booking first, even on the day, could save money. A top range compact car may be better than a low-range standard car.

Don't assume lower range cars are cheapest. Below is our guide to some of the key issues which are now part and parcel of hiring a car, plus our checklist to make sure you don’t get caught out. Full-to-empty fuel policy The no-choice, full-to-empty fuel policy where you pay in advance for a full tank of petrol and return the car as near empty as you dare, is a nice little earner as the customer often pays double the price at the pump and doesn’t get to use all the fuel.
